Apple announced the release of macOS Big Sur on Thursday 12th November. The news came from the “One More Thing” event in Apple, revealing new Mac mini, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro models with the M1 chip.
macOS Big Sur, which was previously unveiled at WWDC in June, will feature an overhauled look with what Apple has been calling the largest update in macOS design since Mac OS X was launched.
The changes should have a fresh feel compared with current macOS while they are subtle. Additional modifications include lighter windows and additional translucency, a more translucent dock, new squircle shape app icons, redone system sound, and more.
The menu bar has refreshed access to an adaptable control center including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and AirDrop, the brightness of the keyboard, Dark Mode, sound levels, and more. The notification center is also redesigned with more interactive notifications grouped in three sizes by app and iOS-style widgets.
Many Apple apps from the first company have also seen improvements and revisions. Safari is faster and efficient with batteries; Messages support effects, @mentions, and more; Maps support the Look Area, indoor maps, and Guides; photo has expanded the editing features, and the new Listen Now section is available for Apple Music.
